Is there an aftermarket starter clutch that people prefer?

CR,

The old parts have been superseded into an assembly now consisting of two parts sold as one.

That interesting about those idler gears. I may replace those because the one that engages the flywheel is a bit worn on one side.

The clutch I am referring to is #1 in the drawing. Mine spins either direction. Is there a preferred replacement for it?

Go to this topic again. This time it will be on page one instead of page two.
It'll be the second posting of page one.
Then scroll down a bit and you will see the one way clutches.
Notice the number of teeth, one has 18 teeth the other has 19 teeth
Make sure you purchase the correct one for your XV1000 or it won't fit:

Ah I see now thanks

Mine is the 19 tooth. Order a caltric one. Waiting for it and the gasket. May get those idler gears while I'm in there. Sounds like a big improvement

CR,

Trust me, it is a big improvement. They started using the new idler gear assembly in 1994 model year.
