Chuck,
First and foremost, what brand tachometer have you purchased? Not all tachometers are created equal. Some have 4-wires some have 5-wires. Wire colors can also be different. One important piece of paper is necessary for installation. The wiring schematic that came with the tachometer you purchased. Hopefully, you have that piece of paper.

Below is a schematic for a "Bikers Choice Tachometer". It may or may not be useful to you, we'll see.

Are you aware where your ignition coils are located?

Do you have a service manual for your bike?

Hi Joe. I have not purchased a tachometer yet. I did want to get some answers from you first. I have those now and thank you very much.
Sincerely Chuck Saylor

I put one on my 1994 xv535 and just followed their wiring instructions that came with the tach. you just need to know where the battery is and and either spark plg wire that the tach sensor wire wraps around

Hal,
Can you let Chuck know who's tachometer you ended up using. He may want to take a look and see what it looks like. A picture of the tachometer mounted could help him with the installation too.

Thanks,
Joe

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Tachometer%2 ... _sb_noss_2
Copy and paste the above address into the browser. When it opens, scroll down to the 11th set of tachs. It's the Harley Davidson one. Real easy to install. I think that added a photo of my set up. let me know if it worked

Thanks Hal.

Chuck,
I took a look at this Tachometer on Amazon that geezyrider (Hal) provided us a link and I believe this tachometer is a mechanical cable driven type and is not an electronic.

Thanks again Hal, much appreciated! Correct me, if I am looking at the wrong tachometer.

Joe,
Oops, My Bad. I looked for through my receipts and for the life of me I can't find the one for that Tach. And there is no MFG name on the Tach itself. I will do some further checks and get back to you.

Try copying and pasting this one. I am pretty sure that it's the one on my bike. But just about any electronic tach will work. Just maybe instead of looping the sensor around the Spark plug wire some may have to be hooked to the number one coil.
