I think from what I have read that a XV535 carb would work. If that is so then a XV535 carb would work for me.

Don't know where you read that, for you didn't reference your source. Always a good idea to reference sources. we ourselves are wanting to learn more. Then we can look at the pros and cons to determine if modifications are indeed possible.

All indications are they may bolt up correctly. But they do not take the same carburetor part numbers. Indicating that there are differences between the two.

Meticulous research will be required to determine differences in them. Such as Jetting and other important differences, for the XV535 carburetor to work properly.

Seeing in your profile that you have both of these bikes: 1983 XV500 and a 1998 XV535.
Try switching the carburetors to see the results.
