Seems the XV400 and XV535 are wired up a bit differently from the XV700 (as seen in Joe's vid). The turn-signal relay is a simple thing, easy to get to (under the right pod), and only has the two connections.
I experimented with some LED lights on my bike and these were the results (the standard relay was used):

I found I could switch out one set of lights for LEDs (rear or front, but not both), and everything worked fine. No rapid flashing.

If all four indicators were switched out to LEDs then there was no indicator light on the dash, and all four indicators blinked at the same time regardless of left or right switch being used. The flashing rate was unaffected.

So an LED specific relay, or a Sylvania LED Equaliser, or Metric Bike Diode Kit (as seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnioBp-N5kQ) would have to be used for the new LED indicators to function normally.

The Metric Bike Diode Kit seems the cheapest and easiest fix for bikes like the XV400 and XV535 and is required when installing LED lights as turn signals on a motorcycle with a single turn signal indicator light on the dash. If not installed, power will feed-back across the indicator light and all turn signals will flash at once.

This place....

..... sells the Metric Bike Diode Kit. it's a pretty easy fit and will make LED indicators function properly on a Virago. It's about $3.00 bucks plus postage.

Thanks to Joe for allowing this post :P
