I have fitted a rear shock off the XT600Z Tenere on my 1982 750 chassis. The shock is, at 390mm eye to eye, 10mm longer than stock, which will raise the rear 15mm. You will also need the lower bushing sleeve from the stock shock. The spring is linear, which is not ideal, but for me (200-210lbs net) it deliver a comfortable ride while not bottoming, even when jumping over small crests. I run minimum preload. Damping can be adjusted for rebound.

Personally, I would have liked to have a 400mm long shock for even more ground clearance, as well as tucking the front in a little more for further reductions in rake and trail, but it is not something I consider important.

I wonder what your sag numbers are? maybe a little more preload, or a stiffer spring (if replaceable) would help with ground clearance?

I was looking for similar information regarding the shocks for later models, but was unable to find anything. Ended up buying shocks from Progressive, which work pretty well. I raised both front and rear via stiffer springs and it's a joy to lean this bike over another few degrees without scraping metal parts

My sag is about 42 mm with me on the seat out of a total 127 mm calculated available travel.

That's very much spot on 1/3rd, which is a good place to start. Nice fit.
