no spark 1100 virago [CLOSED]

Post by Rob » Thu Jan 14, 2016 4:58 pm

Got a guy messaged me here is his problem:

Message sent to you follows
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have gone thru all the steps in your Virago Section on ignition problems
and still cant get spark to the plugs
Bike is a 95 Yamaha Virago XV 1100 - Replaced these Parts
Good Battery
New Correct NGK Plugs
New aftermarket TCI Box 8 pin and 4 pin
New Stator and Pick-up coil( Has the single pick up coil
2 wire but the TCI box has 4 wires as does the wiring
Ignition Coils are getting power and test ok for ohms and will spark to the
plugs when manually grounded.
Added the additional frame Ground.
I can get spark to both plugs when I ground the black wire on the 2 wire
pick up coil , but not when turning over the engine with the starter, It
seems like its a bad pick up coil( But, it is new and ohm test is 197)
I am a very experience motor cycle Mech. But I am Stumped on this
Can you help?
I am trying to figure out what he might possibly be missing.. any help would be great.
I know the coils spark on ground sent from tci. I am leaning towards him having a bad tci even though it is new....
Rob,Thanks for posting my problem .
I am the Guy who sent you the email.
I have tried 2 TCI Boxes , Same results 1 Used, 1 New aftermarket Box
I just today remove the Stator cover to insure the pick up coil wires
were not crushed or damaged( They are ok, Checked Ohms again on pickup
coil reading of 197) , I have read that a pick up coil can look good and test good
but still not send a pulse to the TCI to release spark from coils? Could this be true.
You could test the output of the pickup to the tci.. I have to figure out which wires you need to test. I am not sure if is a ground signal going to the tci to tell it to spark or not. I need to find out which wire to test going out and how it should be tested. I would imagine testing this while it turns over should give a definite where the problem lies. If you tried 2 tci's that should work then the problem likely lies in the stator/pickup area but best to try more tests if possible. Get back to you asap.
Rob:
Here is the Wiring colors going to the 4 spades( Right Side) of the TCI
Coming from pick-up - Blue Changes to gray
Coming From Pickup - Green Changes to black
The Bike has the single 2 wire Pick-up
The other 2 wires are
Red/Green -
Blue/Red
Not sure what these are for, since they is only 1 Pickup , all wiring diagrams I have seen show these wires also coming from the pickup( Since a a lot of early bikes had
2 pick ups, I have not traced them( red/green and Blue/red) , I don't think they are part of the Problem.
I think I will try reversing the blue and the green pick up wires, see if that works
I don't thing you can test the output of the Pick up coil to the TCI with a Digital Multi- Meter ? ( That's what I Have)
"IF" it sends a ground signal to the tci you can pick up the ground signals by hooking the multimeter up to 12v and connecting the ground signal wire going into the tci. make sure it is unplugged from the tci. cranking it should show a voltage spike.
Havent looked into which way the signal goes to the tci yet or which wires signal it. gimme a day at most.
Rob:
How is the pickup coil itself grounded( It bolts to the Stator Cover with 2 bolts , is this the ground?
Tried reversing the 2 wires out of the pickup coil( No change, still no spark)
My apologies. Had a family emergency out of town and was away from my computer. I have a doc appointment at 3 and when I get home from that I will have time to address this for you. No time at the moment.
Peace.
