New to me 87 xv1100 typical starter issues (California)
Picked up a super high mile 1987 xv1100 the other day for 700$. Seller wanted more but on day of sale couldn’t get the bike to start. I had an 85 xv700 almost 10 years ago so I know the starters are terrible. I’m very excited to start wrenching but I’m worried about where to start. The bike sat on a trickle charger all night last night, went to start it up and all
I get is a strong whirring, no box of rocks sound like my old bike and nothing seems to be engaging at all. I'm set to pull out the starter tomorrow and investigate but maybe before I do, someone may have some information to save me from myself.
I added a picture of the bike in case anyone's interested. Prettier than my 700 that’s for sure. Thanks guys.

Omen,
Based on your discretion. It sounds like your Starter Clutch Assembly has bit the dust.
However, there are also newer parts released for the starter system you may want to look at.
Watch these videos:

NEW IDLER GEAR SET - P/N: 3LP-W1551-00-00: You can no longer purchase these gears separately for these gears are now cut at a different degree angle than the older Idler Gear Set. I believe Yamaha went from a 30 degree to a 15 degree Bevel Cut Spline gear. You must now purchase these two gears as an assembly under one Part Number.
As for the one way turning starter clutch assembly below. Know what you are purchasing, if you need one.
There is an 18 tooth and a 19 tooth starter clutch assembly.
If you opt to purchase from an aftermarket source, count the teeth to match your Starter Clutch Assembly.:
Starter Clutch Assembly 18 tooth:
Starter Clutch Assembly 19 tooth:
If for any reason, you need to disconnected the Heavy Cables from the Solenoid. Disconnect the battery Ground cable from the battery first.
WHEN REMOVING THE HEAVY BLACK CABLES FROM THE SOLENOID ASSEMBLY.
Make sure you label which Cable Came From What Solenoid Terminal. That's very important!

Re: New to me 87 xv1100 typical starter issues (California)
Hi, I had the exact same problem ---> https://youtu.be/tIWZ95CJZwU - and after replacing:
STARTER CLUTCH ASSY
product number: 3LP1557000
GEAR, IDLER 2 (optional, mine was old)
product number: 5A81551700
GASKET, CRANKCASE COVER 1 (if old one counld not be taken off without damage)
product number: 3EG1545100
result was this ---> https://youtu.be/KGaJkZV7dB8
Of course, u will need new engine oil, and since you are there, replace shaft oil, too, but I bet you already know all that.

Re: New to me 87 xv1100 typical starter issues (California)
Okay guys! So I dug in labeled my screws and layed them out on cardboard, I saw this as well viewtopic.php?f=57&t=1050
So following the videos and post you made I successfully
Got everything off. And that poor little clutch spins both ways by hand. Also I see the topic of the superseded part came up and I’m actually pretty excited to see how the new part works. Now I have to order my parts and gasket, and as suggested get into replacing the shaft oil.
Finally I did bugger a screw under the starter solenoid that runs through the center of the mechanism. I’m sure I’ll get it out later but if anyone can shoot me a resource to find that part number it would help. I’m very grateful for all the info as it made this all pretty easy going. Added some pics if you guys are interested. Will update as the situation does.
Also noticed my crash bars seem to have broken who knows what that means but replacing that left side piece would be sick too thanks guys!

Re: New to me 87 xv1100 typical starter issues (California)
Omen,
I see you found the easy way of removing the side cover with the solenoid still mounted in the side cover.
If you buggered up that HEX HEAD SCREW. That would be the only way you could get the engine left side cover off!
You take the side cover off with the solenoid. Glad you found that or you would find some new words to add to your vocabulary
Screw that goes through the Bendix Pivot is:
SCREW 90149-08166-00

Re: New to me 87 xv1100 typical starter issues (California)
Quick update, I was really trying to avoid a 400$ starter clutch so I sourced one from a junkyard they say it’s tested and works. It was 40$ so I’m gonna give it a go, I got the bike for 700$ if I can get it running under the 1000$ I’m winning
