1995 XV1100 Trip Odometer reset knob - broken (Oakland CA) (ON HOLD, PENDING UPDATE)

Post by jsyzdek » Tue Jun 29, 2021 7:03 pm

When I got the bike the reset knob on the odometer (for resetting the trip meter) was kinda broken (it was coming out and it was cracked inside), but it kinda worked. Well, until recently when it broke completely.

Any advice on how to fix it, or if it's just mission impossible and the only way to get it to work is to get a new odometer? I'd like to avoid the latter since that may cause headaches with the DMV, for the odometer reading won't match the true reading from the pink slip...

I didn't have time to open it up and figure out. I can ride the bike the way it is and so I'd rather leave it alone until I know what to do with it, or have enough time at hand to figure it out.

Yarek,
There is a fix for it. It is here on the site somewhere. I'll research and see if I can find it.

Thx Joe! this should work.

I'm in the middle of plum season now: got about 250lbs of plums on the tree that need some sugar and heat to last me till next June. When the plum wave is over I'll get into this. I'll report back on how it worked.

Haven't tried it. I'm busy with house renovations for the next few weeks. I'll make sure to drop a line here when I get to this.

I'm not sure though that it will be a quick fix without taking the odometer apart. The piece is broken deep inside. I'm a bit afraid to use crazy glue, risking that I'll fuse everything together deep inside.

I finally got to this. I took the speedo off of its mount and used that opportunity to lube the cable...

The plastic knob was completely broken and it was too short to do anything with glue. I couldn't find thin tubing to push onto the metal screw... As I was looking around the house I found a tip from a tube of caulking. A brand new one that wasn't trimmed. I cut it just a tiny bit and pushed it onto that screw inside. It has enough grab to rotate it. I cut it shorter on the outside and put a little bolt in, so that I can more easily grab it. It works. One day, if I have time, I might think of a different, more elegant solution. For now I'm happy.

Not the prettiest, but it was pretty quick and easy, and if it looses grip again, I can easily fix that with another caulking tube tip.
