My old girl is running like a bucket of poo backfiring and some weird tssss tssss sound ???

Loco,

This page below was taken from the Factory Service Manual for XV1000 with Hitachi Carburetor Specifications.
As you will see, when you Click the Image below, what the Standard Jet Specifications are.

1. Did your bike always run bad or after you did something to it?

2. When was the open air filter and Exhaust installed?

3. When did your XV1000 start backfiring and
When did the weird tssss tssss sounds start occurring?

Modifying how the bike breathes by changing the air cleaner and the exhaust pipes can create consequences. You are changing the harmonics the bike was designed to run properly. Exhaust gas back pressures are important for the bike to run properly. Changing the air inputs and outputs can affect how the bike runs. Re jetting may help some, but is not the cure all. The aftermarket pipes chosen will require you to contact that manufacturer of those pipes and get the jet sizing they recommend for running on an XV1000 Virago with their pipes. For they should have done all the Dyno testing to get the best results for their pipes.
