1985 XV1000 Cam Chain Tensioner Implosion (Alberta, Canada) (SOLVED)

Post by dwoodliffe » Tue Nov 02, 2021 1:07 pm

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this before. The bolt in the centre of the cam chain tensioner sheared off as shown in the photo. I am leary of putting another in if this may be a serious issue. I don't think it is but wanted to check. When I first opened it there was rust inside but I cleaned it out and lubricated it.

dwoodliffe,

Was this damage done after it was removed to clean off the rust and reinstalled back into the engine? After you reinstalled it. Then all Hell broke loose, by bending the center screw?

Yes - I removed it and rust had seeped into the tensioner because the rubber caps were missing However, I managed to loosen it up and reinstalled it. I think that perhaps it was either weakened by corrosion or could have jammed. The pin was pushed all the way in though (see photo). I just installed a new used tensioner and there is very little play in the pin - the pin is all the way out. I thought that perhaps there was a problem with the cam chain. The engine was very noisy and that is when I discovered the damaged part.

Your cam chain tensioner pictures are of two different cam chain tensioners.

Look at the mounting holes etc.

You must go by part numbers to get the correct one.

This is the same unit just upside down. I checked the parts manual and the 84 and 85 were the same part number. I heard talk off a front and rear but could not find any reference in the parts diagrams on CMSNL.

Are the broken off components inside the engine?

Do not try to start the bike if they are. More damage will be created inside the engine.

Are you aware how a Cam Chain Tensioner is adjusted prior to installing it?!
