about to change oil filter and was looking at the parts diagram. There is a pic for a oil relief valve that i dont have? I dont know if the previous owner forgot to put it back in or what? Do I need this part and if so where exactly does it go? It is a 84 xv1000

Any body know where the oil pressure relief valve is located on the bike??????

The Relief Valve Assy #9 is internal to the Engine. You won't see it in the Oil Filter location.

Change the Oil Filter with the filter hole facing out, and the oil filter bypass valve going inward. Don't loose the small O-ring #5 that is attached to the bottom screw. They sometimes drop into the oil catch pan when the screw is removed and the oil filter cover is removed. If not replaced it will LEAK.

Aren't you glad you don't have to change it every oil change.
Here's where it is located. You would need to pull the engine and split the Crankcase. It is located on the inner side of the Right Crankcase near the Oil Level Sensor Switch:

It is on the reverse side of the Oil Filters Cartridge Compartment.
