1995 XV750: Bought my first bike for 500USD! (Houston, Texas)

Post by PocketSized » Tue Jan 11, 2022 5:40 pm

Hey all! As the title says, I recently got my first bike, a '95 XV750 with 24k miles, for $500.

The previous owner was quite the character. It began running poorly, so he called a mobile mechanic to check the carbs. Said mechanic proceeded to completely ruin the carbs. Then he took them to a real shop and they rebuilt them. But he never picked them up, not wanting to pay the 685USD they were asking. So instead he bought a Ducati, and sold his 750 for dirt cheap, without carbs.

The bike was an attempt at a "Bobber" build, done very, very poorly. I could go on for several paragraphs about all of the issues, but the important thing is that I threw some starter fluid in the intake runners and it fired immediately, so the drivetrain is good. It needs all new indicators, including a tail light (he removed them, "I don't give a %$?! if I get pulled over," is what he said). The seat is held on with a single bolt and moves around when you sit on it, front wheel bearing is shot, and there's a lot of missing hardware. But even with all of the parts I'm probably still gonna be on the road for less than 1 grand.

The funny thing is, I don't think I'm going to be spending as much time here as I thought. Initially I thought he had ripped out all of the wiring for the turn signals and brake lights, since I couldn't find the wires, and those I did find weren't getting power. Turns out the wires were hidden in a massive wad of electrical tape, and the signal fuse blew (probably because he shorted the wires while working on it). So the only electrical gremlin I'm chasing now is a non-functional horn. That being said, I'm sure I'll find plenty of questions to ask.

Thank you sir,

Signatures are for whatever a member wants to place in them. The profile is the vital information area about a member and is always at the top right of a topic. Signatures can end up at the very bottom of a very lengthy topic. As an example, most folks do not read my signature and it is in color to stand out. But, alas, most do not read it.

Gotcha. I do have one question that I'm not sure deserves its own topic. If I should make one, just point me where to go :)
Do you know if an 80's XV750 rear fender would fit a '95? Found a good deal on one, and I need it if I want to mount the plate & indicators properly & legally.

PocketSized,

Lets put it this way. That'll be a very BIG NO!

1st generation Virago's are totally different than 2nd generation Virago's. When it comes to Chassis and Body parts.
Look at pictures of an 1981 XV750 it is a Mono Shock Absorber system vs your 1995 XV750 that is a Dual Shock Absorber system. Day vs night scenario.

PocketSized,

In response to your PM to me.

1981 XV750 through 1987 Carburetors were Hitachi.

1988 the Carburetors went to Mikuni Carburetor with a More robust design. Carburetor cables went from single cable to dual cables.

I'm pretty sure 1st generation 1981/82/83 XV750s used Hitachi Carbs with totally different Carburetor Joints (Boots).
1984 through 1987 there were no XV750's. Yamaha provided the XV700 for those 4 years.
XV750 came back on the seen in 1988 through 1997 with Mikuni carbs. XV750 was discontinued in 1998.

Your 1995 XV750 was Totally Different then the ist generation, Carburetors were (Mikuni's) and Carburetor Joints (Boots) were different.

Thank you so much for the info, Joe. Glad I didn't spring for those carbs hoping I could make it work.
