1996 XV535 Petcock Issue (Salem OR) (CLOSED SEMI-SOLVED)

Post by baldchicken » Thu Jun 17, 2021 11:43 am

Took our the gas tank, as I am going to clean it (seeing that the gas inside is bad).

On the bottom of the tank, there is a "Fuel-cock"?! I know the purpose of this (switch to turn on and off the gas), but there seems to be an electrical wire going to it.

I was not able to find any information about this wire or what it does in the manuals.
Can you help me? What does that "FuelCock" do, aside from provide a physical way of turning on/off the flow of fuel?

There is a On / Reserve switch on the throttle side of your handle bar below the Start Switch. It is normally in the "ON" position. When the bike starts to buck and miss as if you are running out of fuel. Set the Switch to "RES" and the petcock will open a solenoid electrically in the petcock that will let the reserve fuel flow to the carburetors. That way you won't have to push the bike to the nearest fuel station. Don't forget to switch it back to "ON". For the next time it begins to buck you will be out of fuel completely!!

Edited with this below addition:

This will show you the solenoid inside the Petcock.

Now another problem. It looks as though one of the fuel filters (fuel towers) broke off in my tank.

I was able to remove it, but I do not see JUST that piece available for purchase.

2 questions:
1. can you help me find it?
2. If it is not for sale, any "neat" ways to make one work?

The stand pipes on the petcock, as far as I know, are not serviceable items. They only come P.I.A (Purchased In Assembly). Can only be gotten with a totally new Petcock Assembly or a used one that doesn't have them broken off.

Not aware of anyone that has Gerry-Rigged one on.

EFFFFFF!

What are the negative side effects associated with NOT running one? Seeing that the 535 have an inline fuel filter also?

The Stand pipes are what the Petcock Reserve fuel system uses to meter the fuel to signal you when to switch the throttle switch cluster from "ON" to "RES" to start using the fuel that is for Reserve use.

You don't need the reserve system. However, you will need to know how far you can go using the odometer mileage reading. You will need to know just how far you can go before you really run out of fuel.

I have no idea why the stand pipes have plastic filters on them. As you said, the bike has a down stream fuel filter anyway.

That is what I thought.

I have become, somewhat of an expert at taking that tank out... so I may just run it without and if worse comes to worse.... buy a new petcock

Thanks!
