1983 XV500 Spark Plug Port stripped (Ottawa Ontario)

Post by GDad » Tue Sep 14, 2021 10:45 am

Morning all

So my latest endeavor has come up with a knucklhead that must have stripped the spark plug, proceed to screw it up trying to tap it and then covered the plug with goop and put it in lol.

I am not a mechanic however I like to attempt everything one and screw it up twice before getting it right or giving up and paying someone lol.

so I have the parts bike and the one I am working on. Both XV500 K - Can I just take the rear cylinder set off the parts bike and replace it ? Obliviously some work and gaskets etc.. I was going to rebuild the motor anyway over the winter.

I know I am making it sound simpler than it is but in my mind - same motor, same year, same part? lol

Joe I know your going to have more to say lol.

Naaah.

You just need to remove that Cylinder Head not the whole Cylinder.

Yup, there's going to be little challenge Swapping the head over. Timing everything to spec's is the biggest concern.

Good thing you have the Factory Repair Manual now :!:

Perfect - I was hoping that was your answer. I also have a buddy down the road who likes beer and has rebuilt more bikes than I can count (current one a 75 850 'Moto Guzzi)

This is going to be a longer rebuild as I am going to try to powder coat parts and rebuild it to last. hence the money on the manual. I did also find a whole replacement gasket kit here that looks right. https://tinyurl.com/yswh6hzw

Thanks Joe

G,

Looks to be the correct gasket set XV500K "K" stands for 1983 model year.

Also, "jsyzdek" has suggested re-threading the hole. There are a few options of doing that if you wanted to do that prior to tearing both engines down.

Your call here.

Hey G,

I just recalled seeing this:
I also have a buddy down the road who likes beer and has rebuilt more bikes than I can count
Well sir, I hope you have stocked up on beer.

If Justin Trudeau has opened up the border, I could drive over and help you guys out with your bike repair.
About 500 miles (804 kilometers) one way.

At minimum, stop and help with lowering the level of your over abundant beer supply.

In the UK we call the rethreading HELICOIL(ing), I've seen it a few times on car spark plug hole repairs and works really well if done correctly, but you will still have to get the offending head off to do it. At least it saves you dismantling both engines. This is only my opinion, I am not a mechanic. Possibly a head swap is a better option if it were in better condition than the original
