Yamaha 1983 XV400 Special - Headlight Cover (Norway)

Post by dondan » Thu May 13, 2021 4:35 am

Hello,
Since i have always received great advice here ill give this one a try aswell.

When dismounting the headlight before a steering head beering change i realized the headlight cover was assembled to the headlight cover with duct tape..no bolts, nothing. How was this setup originally?

A The indicator/headlight frame is connected to the headlight cover

B Headlight cover is assembled with the headlight

D is holding the headlight to the headlight cover

I can figure out how to assemble this but i would like to know how it was setup originally on this or a similar bike.

Don,

Your pictures are good for detail work.

However, can you take one or two pictures farther back to see how the headlight bucket is mounted to the bike.

It looks to me that you have more holes in the headlight bucket than other Virago's. Can't tell if it is the standard Virago headlight or from another bike.

Hope these pictures get you a better look ViragoJoe.
Bottom part is mounted on one side of the triple clamp and the upper parts are mounted with the bolts from the dashboard. The triple clamp has only one hole which fits with the lower part of the headlight frame.

Don,

Tab labeled "D" is the latch the holds the upper (Top) portion of the headlight lens assembly to the top side on the headlight bucket where the wires reside.

Tabs labelled "C" are the inner brackets that hold the bottom of the headlight lens assembly to the lower portion of the headlight bucket via 2 metric J.I.S. screws. Take the Headlight lens assembly to the hardware store to find the correct screws needed to hold it to the headlight bucket.

Should be a simple task to get the lens assembly held on properly w/o the use of duct tape.

Glad you found what you needed.

I lost one and the only replacement I could find at the time was made of Stainless Steel.

Stainless Steel isn't magnetic, so I had an issue trying to get it back into place with my windshield still on the bike. I would use a long screwdriver with a magnet against the shaft of the screwdriver to hold the screw in place at the tip. Had to devise other methods to get the screw back in.
