I had the same issue on my 95 XV1100 and eventually it quit altogether. My problem turned out to be a seized sending unit on the front wheel, good luck.

UPDATE:
Turns out the rear cyl exhaust bolt backed itself off. Sometimes it really is the simplest thing. :oops:

That's what ya get for not knowing electricity. I wish it had been something I could have just undone and replaced but when it comes to electrics I have to pass. :?

Well, the nasty old thing is fixed. A loose exhaust bolt led to shorting out my fusebox. new fusebox and fuses and 2 switchblock rebuilds later and I have a $400 hole in my pocket- BUT I RIDE AGAIN!! MWAHAHAHA :twisted:

Ok folks, need some other brains here: Mech turned off my bike via the red killswitch on the throttle side switchblock and it shorted. I took it into the shop to get the exhaust gasket swapped out but the noob at the shop (who has to do everything by the numbers) when testing it to be sure the leak is where I already told him it was, shut off my bike by the kill switch instead of the ignition key and shorted it out. They've rebuilt...

I'm on the coast a little to the north on Vancouver island. Just started getting wet here but the temps are sill way above normal. Can't ride a bike that wont start though :-(
